EDUCATION MINISTRY

ALL SAINTS HIGHER SECONDARY SCHOOL, PEREN

The beginning of Catholic Mission in Peren can be traced to 1964. A zealous missionary, Fr Joseph Felix, who had been working as the assistant priest of Kohima parish, visited Peren in 1964. In the same year Most Rev. Hubert D’ Rosario, the Bishop of Dibrugarh, visited the place at the request of the local leaders. Later in 1965 a school named “All Saints’ School” was opened, and was looked after from Jalukie. Once when Bishop Abraham Alengimattathil and Fr George Kunnel msfs, while returning from a tour of Nchan and Nzauna villages under present Tening, paid a  visit to the then ADC of Peren. He was a friend known to both. Bishop was so impressed at the request he made for the presence of priests and sisters (he was a past student of St Antony’s Collge, Shillong) and the support he offered, so much so, it was almost an on-the-spot decision to open a centre at Peren.

In March 1965 All Saints Home Cambridge School was started in a private building and residence of Late MrIkiesing Thou (former Head Dobashi and later MLA). Late MrIkiesing Thou offered his residence free of cost to run the school, even though it was only for a short period. All Saints Home Cambridge School had classes from KG 1- Standard 6. But after a few months, the school was shifted from late MrIkeisingThou’s residence to MrAmangSephen’s double-storey timber house in the heart of the town (it still exists). The school was run for 7 long years in this building. The ground floor rooms were used as combined classrooms for KG 1 & 2, Classes 1 & 2, etc. and the top floor rooms were occupied by the teachers and the boarders. And in 1972, with the support and effort of the then Tribal Council, the locals and other well-wishers of the school, the present school site was donated or allotted to develop All Saints Home Cambridge School by the administration.

On March 2, 1980, the Catholic Mission in Peren was established as a Catholic Centre. Fr Kurian Pattimackel msfs was installed as the first Priest-incharge of the centre. And on May 5, the same year Fr Sebastian Kuzhupil (sr) (now he belongs to East Africa province) was appointed as an associate priest. And on July 14, 1980, Congregation of Mother of Carmel (CMC), sisters of Pala province from Kerala arrived at Peren to form their first community. Thus with the presence of sufficient religious personnel, late Bishop Abraham Alangimattathil, bishop of Kohima, bifurcated the centre from St Xavier parish Jalukie and canonically raised the centre to St Paul’s Church/Parish on November 10, 1980. Thus since 1980 All Saints Hr. Sec School, Peren, has been under the care of the Missionaries of St Francis de Sales.
