Fr Philip Mangatt was the first Headmaster of St Francis de Sales School, Medziphema, located in the Angami area of Nagaland. Bubbling with enthusiasm, he started his work with full gusto. It was not easy to run a school where there was so much prejudice and hostile atmosphere around against the catholic church. With his infectious smile and affable nature, he was able to win over many sceptics and much of the animosity melted away. 

The school received provisional recognition in 1986 and the first batch of students appeared for HSLC exams in 1988. The first batch of students passed with flying colours. Year after year the school has secured 100 percent results and consistently maintained high academic excellence. In recognition of its excellence, the school was awarded an appreciation certificate by Secretary NBSE in 1992. In the HSLC examinations, Mr Deepak Chouhan secured 17th Rank in 1995 and Miss. Divya Sharma secured 19th rank in 2002. The school has won several coveted trophies in interschool meets and local tournaments including NACS interschool volleyball and basketball trophies in1990 and the trophy in the C E F Interschool Choir Singing in 2002.

Yet another milestone on its journey was the opening of the Higher Secondary School in 2000 when Fr SibyMattapillil was the Principal. The Commerce stream began in 2008. Another important day to remember is April 19, 2016, when the new wing of the school was blessed by Bishop James Thoppil, inaugurated by Fr Emmanuel Mappilaparambil.

The present strength of the school is 1690. It is one of the most sought-after schools in the area and has made great strides under the dynamic and able leadership of different Principals and Vice-Principals. The school has 59 members on the teaching staff and 11 on the non-teaching staff.
