St. Francis de Sales (SFS) School is a coeducational Catholic Missionary School under Secondary Education Board of Assam (SEBA) run by the Dibrugarh Province of the Missionaries of St Francis de Sales, known as MSFS fathers or Fransalians. The school is managed by the Bishop of Tezpur, under a registered charitable society under the Society’s Registration Act XXI of 1860. The school is in the top list schools of Assam particularly Dhemaji for its academic excellence.

Fr VarkeyValiadathu pioneered SFS mission at Dhemaji in 1979. On the gracious invitation of Most Rev. Joseph Mittathany, the Bishop of Tezpur, Fr VarkeyValiadeth was appointed in 1978 to Dhemaji to begin a mission. Full ofmissionary zeal and enthusiasm, a young priest then, Fr Varkey toiled hard to establish the school and the mission. In 1979, he invited a few leading citizens of the town for a tea and proposed the idea of opening an English medium school. All of them found merit in the proposal.

However, there were a few who preferred to look at the developments differently and opposed the proposal. As usual, there was resistance from few in the public, as some were not ready to admit Christian Missionaries into their midst. The most difficult issue was to obtain land for the institution. However, the providence of God and persistence of His labourers won over oppositions and procured the present plot of land from MrHiralal Sharma, right in the centre of the town with easy accessibility to the railway station and bus stand. The school began with a few children in a small Assam type building in the ‘International year of the Child’ i.e., in 1979. In few years’ time, the school grew into prominence and majority of the parents realized that the motto of the institution is nothing but ‘to Lead from Darkness to Light’.

St. Francis de Sales School, Dhemaji, that sprouted as a tiny rose plant with 12 buds 39 years ago in 1979 holds a strength of around 2000 students and 60 teachers at present. More than 3000 students have passed out through the portals of this institution till date who form part of our esteemed Alumni Association that has become more active by holding annual gathering and initiating social action programmes.
