PARISH MINISTRY

ST FRANCIS DE SALES PARISH PASIGHAT

As of 2016, the parish of Pasighat consists of 1185 faithful, 194 families and 13 villages. The faith, life and works of Bro. Prem Bhai, George Taying, John Pertin and family, Takop (Jacob) Taggu and family, Abel Darang and family, TajongTamuk (catechist), Mrs Celin Kaki and Thomas Siram of Rani village, Mathew Ering and DukerPadum of Miram, Dupak and Jerang families of Niglok, Obang Messar and Tabing families of Mikong, Sitang of Bilat, Tabuk (Obuk) Tamuk of Sissen and others helped in building up the Catholic community. In 2001, a prayer-cum-hymn book ‘RutumeYitgelaju’ was printed out for the purpose of prayer and faith building. It was updated and reprinted as ‘Aung Bedang’ in 2006. A third edition of the same was undertaken in2016. The work on the Catholic translation of the New Testament into Adi- Minyong is in the last stage of its completion.

The church has a common cemetery, in the land donated by the SFS Mission at Baskotta. The ministry of the parish priest at Pasighat includes the caring for the sick at the General hospital also. A number of sick and suffering catholics from across the Siang districts are brought to the Civil hospital and other private hospitals very regularly for treatments. All these faithful seek the prayers of the priests during their illnesses. And the priests of the parish generously avail themselves to them without failing. They help them spiritually and materially. Another important ministry undertaken by the priests there is Jail Ministry. In 2012, Fr George Puthenkunnel initiated it and this ministry has continued thereafter. Since 2014, with the participation of the catholics of the parish, Fr Varghese Manikathan has been organising the public enactment of the Way of the Cross on Good Friday. Annual Sabhas have been a regular event since 1997.

The Parish Council comes together every first Sunday of each month. These gatherings take place at different villages of the Parish during which the different issues of the different villages are addressed. This practice helps in responding to the needs of the village churches. On every second Saturday and Sunday, a charismatic team, consisting of the parish priest, sisters and lay- leaders, go to different villages and stay there to conduct prayers, pray with them and for them.

Missionary Sisters of Mary Help of Christians (MSMHC)

The MSMHC sisters of Tezpur Province joined the MSFS at Pasighat on December 18,1998 and since then have been engaging in all the activities of the Mission. The pioneers were SrsCrecentiaMinj and Jacinta Augustine. For sometime they also served the mission by running a home science department at the flood affected site. However, the effort was found not rewarding and hence the place is used to shelter the support staff of the mission.
